The FPF was founded in 1982 and it is a member of the International Petanque Federation (F.I.P.J.P.). FPF has participated all the World Championship games since it has been founded, except the first junior competition. At the end of 2008 there were 50 petanque clubs and 566 licensed players in FPF.

In 1996 FPF organized the Ladies World Championships in Pori Finland.

In 1997 FPF supported World Games Petanque in Lahti Finland.
